When Solidarity is Not a Metaphor
April 16 to 21, 2024 The exhibition When Solidarity Is Not a Metaphor, created by Alserkal Initiatives in partnership with Cité internationale des arts and in collaboration with Lightbox, took place as part of the 2024 Venice Biennale.
For the occasion, Elena Sorokina hosted a conversation with Magdi Masaraa and Saad Eltinay.
How does it feel to write poetry in an endangered language, seen as rare and disappearing by the outside world? And yet, this language is your mother tongue, the one you would like to protect and pass on to next generations... What does it mean to apply storytelling to document an ongoing revolution, while reflecting on family, intimacy, masculinity, and power ? Can these actions be considered acts of care ? These and other questions were discussed during the conversation, related to but also going beyond the current context of Sudan’s civil movements.
